CaIFF Webinar: Professor Ben Boyd
Scattering and global health - convergence of two different languages
We have been involved in delivering several initiatives in the global health space where we have used scattering approaches to generate new insights that have helped advance therapeutic interventions for low economy settings.
This has involved interactions with people well outside the scattering community but have led to a pleasant commonly asked question of 'can your synchrotron stuff tell us about this'. At the scattering community level, we have developed methods of undertaking scattering studies in physiologically-relevant media and on physiologically-relevant timescales to provide insights into mechanism of action and formulation design that arguably could not have been achieved using other methods.
In particular, we have been using the diffraction of solid drug particles to inform processes such as precipitation, dissolution and transformation between polymorphic forms to explain issues around bioavailability and stability for both oral and injectable applications of drugs to fight mainly infectious diseases
