Pharmacy students celebrated last exams with their fiery tradition

Pharma Education

This Monday, PharmaSchool’s students said goodbye to their bachelor's program with their unique tradition: the burning of their lab coats.

Happy pharmacy students.

This ritual takes place each year and it not only symbolizes the completion of their studies, but it is also a sign of the strong spirit of unity among pharmacy students.

A symbolic tradition

PharmaSchool students have this longstanding tradition that sets them apart from other (slightly duller) student environments. During their first year, pharmacy students receive creatively decorated lab coats from older students. These coats become a cherished part of their study journey, accompanying them through all the lab work during their bachelor's program.

Goodbye, lab coat! Goodbye, being a bachelor student!

As soon as the students have finished their last exams, they get together at Grønningen here at campus. Surrounded by friends and fellow students, they set fire to their lab coats – a symbolic sacrifice and goodbye to their old status and a welcoming of their new identity. Although it may hurt a little to set fire and say goodbye to the carefully crafted, beloved and never washed! lab coats.

A strong sense of community

The burning of lab coats is part of a very strong sense of community among our PharmaSchool students. It's a shared experience that connects alumni with current students – across life science industry, hospitals, pharmacies and academia: the spirit of our PharmaSchool students is something special.
