Seminar: Regulation of medicines, commercial bias, and public safety

This seminar examines the interplay of drug regulation and commercial influences on the production and interpretation of scientific evidence. Drug safety research is often highly subject to commercial ‘muddying of the waters’ discounting evidence of harm. Media reports can also lead to an unrealistic and unbalanced view of both the harmful effects and benefits of medicine use. For example, calls for faster access to new cancer treatments may be based on exaggerated expectations of treatment benefit.
